Wonder

by R. J. Palacio

Introduction:

A childrens book with happy ending guaranteed.

Overview:

"August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance."

Questions:

  • 1. The author provided many different character's points of view - did you relate or find yourself thinking similarly to any of the characters?
  • 2. Did you ever encounter a classmate that was different and singled out - how did you interact with them?
  • 3. Have you ever felt like the outsider or could relate to Auggie? What happened and reflecting back would you do anything differently?
  • 4. Did you find the book to be realistic? Why or why not?
  • 5. How does they style/narration of the book compare to others we’ve read? Do you like it?
  • 6. If you could change something in the book, what would it be, if anything?

Discussion:

  • Are kids books realistic or too simplified. Intentionally make characters good/bad with less depth.
  • Raising kids with disability, bullying, differences.
  • Being different.
  • Narration style - jumping between characters. Liked reading sister Olivia and boyfriend's perspective. Would like to hear Julian's perspective.
  • Relating to characters.
